Summary

The Inquiry class starship, one of Starfleet's newest designs, will help lead the Federation into the 25th century. It was designed to be a multi-mission cruiser and a explorer. Smaller and more compact than the Odyssey class, the Inquiry class has the ability to perform most of the same jobs the aging Galaxy class can, but with a smaller platform.

The Inquiry class has good maneuverability for a ship of its size. Couple that with high warp speeds and an experimental quantum slipstream drive, the vessel is capable of emergency response and combat missions as well as its primary exploration role. One feature lacking in the class is the ability for saucer separation. Some of the advanced technology built into the Inquiry class was pioneered aboard the Odyssey and Gladiator classes include the Type-II Positronic Computer Core, Type-XIV Phaser Arrays, Quantum Slipstream Drive, Type-III Ablative Armor, and Multi-Quantum Spatial Shield System.

2389: Starfleet issues a design brief for a combat oriented vessel capable of superior ship-to-ship combat, incorporating the latest technology, and capable of exploration assignments as well. Starfleet views the theoretical proposals, basing the ship's design heavily on the Curiosity Class. Briefs for the propulsion, computer, weapons and spaceframe parameters. These are sent out to Starfleet design agencies for consultation. Propulsion dynamic are approved and sent to the Jupiter Station for in-depth study. M/ARA design is standardized for the class. Spaceframe design is approved and full specifications are sent to Beta Antares Fleet Yards.

2390: Starfleet views the Design Schematics for the new class and after deliberation the primary design is approved and briefs propulsion, computer, weapons and spaceframe parameters are sent out to Starfleet Design agencies for consultation. Spaceframe Design is approved and full specifications are forwarded to the Beta Antares Fleet Yards for designations. Production begins with a projected 8 year turnover for the Prototype ship.

2391: Weapon and computer schematics are sent to Starbase 400 for R&D. It is decided to use the same systems aboard the new Inquiry class that is planned for the new Odyssey class. Propulsion schematics are sent to the Tokyo R&D center. Nacelle designs rejected and set for redesign.

2392: Construction begins. Redesigned nacelles are approved. New Type-II Positronic Computer Core finishes development and are delivered.

2393: The Stardrive section nears chassis completion. Primary and secondary chassis's now at 70% completion. Computer Core is fitted. Work continues on habitat and outer hull sections. Late in year computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from station control to ship control.

2394: Computer system now operating at 68% of maximum. System expected to become self aware within the year. Type-III Ablative Armor designed for the Gladiator Class integrated. Bridge module is attached. Bridge and Deck One layout receives minor redesign and retrofitting.

2395: Warpcore begins primary testing. Type-XIV Phaser Array designs from Starbase 400's R&D arrive. Weapons systems and targeting scanners installed. Multi-Quantum Spatial Shield System designed for the Gladiator Class installed. Shuttle bay receives slight internal redesign.

2396: USS Inquiry leaves dry dock for primary testing. USS Inquiry returns to Beta Antares and warp stress coating is applied. USS Inquiry begins deep space assessments late in the year. USS Inquiry returns to the Beta Antares for final exterior markings and paint. On 31, May 2396 the USS Inquiry is officially commissioned by Starfleet during a brief ceremony. Bridge plaque is put in pride of place and Captain Zane takes command. USS Inquiry is ordered to begin limited shakedown cruise before being sent to the front lines in the Beta Quadrant.
